Study as a Research Scholar at University of Michigan Medical School for One Year in USA

Dr. Xianwei Cui, Associate Professor of Nanjing Maternal and Child Health Medical Institute, Nanjing Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital (Women’s Hospital of Nanjing Medical University), Who was financial supported by Jiangsu Provincial Medical Youth Talent Program (Grant No. QNRC2016109) as well as the Six Talent Peaks Project in Jiangsu Province (YY-084) to study with Professor Ling Qi at University of Michigan Medical School starting from May 5, 2019 to May 14, 2020.
As a top-ranked public university, the University of Michigan has tradition of excellence in research, learning and teaching, and more. Dr. Ling Qi began to work at University of Michigan Medical School as a professor from 2016. Their group are interesting in exploring the physiological role of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) homeostasis in context of health and diseases, with a special focus on ER-associated protein degradation (ERAD). In the past few years, they dissected the significance of ERAD in white fat, pancreas, gut, neuron, liver, brown fat and so on. All these works were published in top journals, including Science, Nat Cell Biol, Cell Metab, J Clin Invest, PNAS, EMBO J, Diabetes, etc. Now, Ling is the president of Chinese-American Diabetes Association and Chair of NIH Cellular Aspects of Diabetes and Obesity (CADO) study section.
During this period, Dr. Cui has broadened his knowledge and professional skills on molecular biology. Specifically, he devoted to investigating the role of ERAD and autophagy in alpha cells together with a Clinical Lecturer, Rachel. They demonstrate that alpha cells are impacted more by defective autophagy rather than defective Sel1L-Hrd1 ERAD, but that these pathways cooperate to maintain functional alpha cell mass.
